Common Mistakes

When it comes to audio visual technology, the most common mistake people make is planning for technology only after their building has been constructed or their remodeling project is near completion.

While our What to Consider First section details out a complete list of factors to consider before you build, the following list will show you a few things that people discover when they don’t plan the audio visual technology early in the process.

Electrical & Cabling Issues
  • Standard electrical conduit is ¾” – often this is not a large enough conduit to accommodate the needs of audio visual technologies that will be used.

  • Power is not in the right place or there’s not enough of it to go around.

  • There’s a lack of cabling and electrical access to tables

  • Cables and electrical wiring are exposed, or there’s a lack of coordination between cabling and furniture.

  • Improper electrical grounding causes noise in picture and sound.

Troubles with the Room
  • It’s tough to find out after the fact that your presentation room is the wrong dimension for all participants to see and hear properly – but it happens.

  • The high-tech room was somehow designed to be right next to the restrooms or other high-traffic areas (break rooms, high-traffic hallways).

  • The lighting plan was done before the audio visual technology was considered; there’s little ability to properly control lighting, especially for large screens.

Troubles with the Technology
  • The screen wasn’t properly measured for the room, so it is too big and overwhelms audience members who sit in front, or it’s too small and can’t be seen by everyone in the room.

  • The credenza and millwork were not designed to accommodate the heat from the technology, so the equipment is prone to overheating.

  • Microphones aren’t in the right place or are being improperly used (ex., ceiling microphones that are several feet too far away to be used as speech reinforcement) and don’t work as expected.
