Educational Village

History

Funded by federal and state grants, Educational Village was a unique project intended to introduce approximately 540,000 young students in South San Diego County to the dynamic, ever-changing world of communications technology. This multi-million dollar contract with San Diego County's K-12 public school system and Southwestern College in National City, CA, was kicked off at the beginning of the 2004-05 school year.

Challenge

South San Diego County was searching for a classroom program that could deliver real-time, appropriate technology resources to children who needed a connection to the mainstream – primarily underprivileged kids who otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn about the very essential role technology plays in the world today. Ultimately, the knowledge gained through this program would encourage many students to attend Southwestern College to study audio visual communications following high school.

Solution

Johnson Consulting Engineers of San Diego designed the audio visual infrastructure of Educational Village. AVI Systems San Diego (formerly Televideo) provided the installation and integration services.

Result

The result is a fully integrated system designed to teach students about videoconferencing, internet communications, video streaming, video production, web design and more. The project includes a Cyber Café, digital production labs, and learning labs with videoconferencing equipment and touch screen electronic white boards.

Educational Village is a state-of-the-art, award-winning program that has the potential to become a national model that could be adopted by schools across the country.
