History

Central Michigan University is a nationally distinguished institution of higher education located in Mount Pleasant, in the center of Michigan's scenic Lower Peninsula.

Challenge

CMU wanted to combine their health professions, neuroscience and clinical psychology programs and its many associated research initiatives and outreach services into one technologically advanced environment that promotes learning, patient care, collaboration and discovery.

Solution

AVI Systems was brought in as the systems design engineer and the design-build integrator for this high-tech, leading-edge facility.

Project Details

This technology-rich learning environment includes 6 classrooms with video cubes for collaborative learning. The entire facility is controlled by a simple-to-use e-control system. High tech projectors and document cameras enhance the learning experience in multiple classrooms. Faculty members use new technology to annotate onto computer-generated material for emphasis to their students.

The Global Telepresence Room utilizes a video wall, 3 controllable cameras and multiple push-to-talk microphones. Video conferencing via the codec in the Master Control Room is facilitated from this environment.

There are more than 60 cameras throughout the clinical area, with audio visual signals switched via 2 extensive routers. This area is used for archiving studies, or viewing them live, with full control of the media viewing and archiving from Master Control. There is a privacy mode to isolate an environment from viewing when necessary, to accommodate HIPPA requirements.

Master Control can receive signals from the many cameras in the building and send the signal to a video server or live stream on a video format with the system. A live recording system allows for storage of curriculum from any teaching area. Special software is used for archiving and data management of all of the stored media.

Result

The new Health Professions Building is a 2-story, 175,000 square foot building that features technologically advanced classrooms, clinics and laboratories. The building unites CMU's respected health care programs in a single, outstanding environment that’s conducive to learning, treatment, collaboration and discovery.
